Rhinoceros 3D, developed by Robert McNeel and Associates in Seattle, is the industry-standard NURBS modeller for architecture and design. Unlike BIM platforms, Rhino excels at freeform geometry: complex facades, bespoke roof forms, parametric components, and anything requiring precision surface modelling that falls outside the constraints of BIM workflows. It runs natively on both Windows and Mac.
What separates Rhino from other 3D tools is Grasshopper, the visual programming environment bundled with every licence since Rhino 6. Grasshopper lets architects build parametric scripts that drive geometry, automate repetitive tasks, and connect to structural analysis, environmental simulation, and fabrication tools via an enormous plugin ecosystem. Plugins like Karamba3D, Ladybug Tools, and Kangaroo turn a base Rhino licence into a computational design platform without additional software purchases.
UK studios use it at every scale. Small practices favour it for bespoke residential work where complex geometry is central to the design identity. Larger offices run Grasshopper pipelines for facade optimisation, daylight analysis, and generative planning layouts. - 2D documentation is possible but not Rhino's strength: most studios still need AutoCAD or similar for construction drawings
- DWG files from AutoCAD or Revit do not always display cleanly in Rhino's viewport
